Welcome to 6th Grade Language Arts with Mr. Baggitt!
READING IS AN "EMPATHY ENGINE!"
We all love stories. They have the power to inspire, entertain, educate, engage, and enrich all at the same time. Reading and writing are the keys we use to unlock the power of stories.
I love reading and writing, and I believe that students can learn to think critically and to better understand themselves and the world around them through these important skills. They are also fun! I'm looking forward to an excellent year!
In the 6th grade, we will be reading a variety of fiction (short stories and novels), non-fiction/informational texts, and poetry to strengthen our comprehension skills. There will be an emphasis on applying knowledge of SOL learning targets to authentic texts and students’ own independent reading. In addition, we will be developing our grammar and writing skills by focusing on the Traits of Writing model, with a particular emphasis on reflective and narrative writing. Students will be assessed in a variety of ways, including quizzes, writing projects, unit tests, and benchmarks.
I will be posting the Unit Plans to the Unit Plans folder in the document container below for an overview of what students will be learning.
I will be sending the syllabus/welcome letter home with students on Tuesday, August 20th. I will also post it below in the "first week" folder. I am asking that each student have the syllabus (with questions) completed and the bottom portion signed and handed back to me by Tuesday, September 3rd.

Most classroom handouts will be uploaded in folders in the document container that appears beneath the calendar. These folders will be categorized by learning targets (SOL standards) in addition to folders for homework, vocabulary, and writing. The only handouts, notes, or other documents that will not be posted are those that are under copyright restrictions. Please email me if you have trouble opening any documents.
Opportunities for Extra Help:
I’d like to mention a few opportunities for students to get extra help in Language Arts. To begin, each school day, any student can come to my room (1525) during either Flex Period (Period 4) or lunch for help. If they wish to come during lunch, they only need to see me during 4th Period and I will give them a pass to get to the front of the lunch line.
Probably the best way to get extra help is through Homework Club. I will be hosting "Homework Club" with several other teachers each Wednesday afternoon from 3-5 PM. In order to take advantage of this, parents must sign a permission slip. The permission slip can be found below in the "Permission Slips" folder.
