MATH and SCIENCE SPECIALTY PROGRAM

Mission

To provide students with opportunities to explore in-depth mathematical and scientific concepts and principles in an enriching program of study while further developing their critical thinking skills.

The Mathematics and Science program is an interest-based program offered to qualified sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students at Marsteller Middle School. The program provides students the opportunity to become engaged in an enriching program of study in mathematics and science. Students in this program are challenged and motivated to develop their critical thinking skills through discovery and exploration.  Express transportation is provided for transfer students.

Who Can Apply?

Any student that meets the expectations listed below and is in Marsteller's acceptance boundaries may apply to the Math Science Specialty Program (MSSP) as a rising 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student.

Marsteller Math and Science Specialty Program Expectations for the 2021/22 school year:

  • A minimum grade of B in Math and Science classes and a minimum grade of C in all other classes
  • Demonstrate an expressed interest and enthusiasm for  Math and Science
  • Attendance and Conduct will be taken into consideration
  • Expectations have been updated for the 2022-2023 school year and apply to the 2022-2023 cohort and forward.
  • Students who do not fall  into Marsteller's base school boundaries will apply as a transfer student to be entered into a lottery.  The lottery will be held in Mid February.
  • Transfer Middle Schools (Lottery) - Bull Run, Gainesville, Parkside, Reagan, The Nokesville School, and Unity Braxton Middle School. 
  • Express Transportation will be provided to transfer students and will be confirmed after acceptance

Application Window

  •  In order to be considered for the program, qualified students and their parents or guardians must complete an online application and provide necessary information. 
  • The application will be open November 1st - February 1st.

  • It is important to realize that there are no exceptions to the February 1st deadline! After this date, the link to the online application will no longer be active.
  • If your child will be newly enrolled in PWCS after the application window closes, you will have 30 days from the date you enroll in PWCS to fill out a paper application.

  • October 11th: General Divisionwide Middle School Specialty Program Information Night (Spanish interpretation)
  • October 19th: General Divisionwide EL Middle School Specialty Program Information Night (same information presented as Oct. 11th but all requested languages will be offered for interpretation)
  • November 8th: Marsteller Math & Science Specialty Program Information night at 6:30 pm by Zoom.   A recording of this event is posted on the "important dates and details" tab of this webpage.
  •  January 6th: Marsteller Math & Science Specialty Program Information night at 6:30 pm in person at the school.
