What is the criteria to become a member of NJHS? What are the requirements of membership?

Per PWCS Regulation 664-4 (updated June 12, 2019):

Membership Selection Criteria

I. The student must earn a cumulative scholastic average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or the equivalent standard of excellence at the end of the third nine-week grading period of the school year, and must have been in attendance at the school the equivalent of one semester. In extenuating circumstances, the semester rule may be waived by the faculty council.

A. Three teacher recommendation forms should be completed for each student.
B. At least two recommenders should be teachers of core academic classes.
C. At least two teacher recommenders should be current teachers.
D. A student may ask a community member to complete the third

III. Students may be asked to complete a personal statement or essay as a part of the selection process.

IV. Teachers will rate the student using the criteria on the attached rating form (see Attachment I or II) and forward the evaluation directly to the faculty council.

Membership Requirements:

I. Students recommended and approved for induction into the NJHS will be inducted in the spring of each year. Regardless of when the student is selected, he/she is expected to fulfill all obligations related to membership in the NJHS. A student who does not fulfill such obligations may be removed from membership in accordance with NJHS rules and regulations.

II. Students must maintain scholarship, character, leadership, service, and citizenship expectations to maintain membership in the NJHS. Members who fall below these standards shall be warned in writing by the chapter advisor and given a reasonable amount of time to correct the deficiency. In the case of flagrant violation of school rules or the law, the member does not have to be provided warning.

III. Students who face dismissal shall have the right to a hearing by the faculty council and can appeal the decision to the building principal.

The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Marsteller Middle School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Students are selected after completing a candidate form, and then having 3 current year teachers (2 core and 1 non-core) complete an evaluation form.

Students in grades seven and eight are eligible for membership. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (non-rounded) or better on a 4.0 scale. Each spring those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Form that provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.

To evaluate a candidate’s character, the Faculty Council uses two forms of input. First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, and leadership.  These forms and the Candidate Forms are carefully reviewed by the Faculty Council to determine membership. A majority vote of the Council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule.

Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all five criteria that led to their selection

Students are expected to complete 18 hours of community service by the end of the school year.  Nine of the hours must be completed by December 31, 2021.  An additional 9 hours need to be completed between January 1, 2022 and May 31, 2022.  Opportunities for service hours will be provided throughout the school year as they arise and students will learn of these opportunities via Canvas.  Forms for service hours should be turned in once the service is completed (i.e. if you complete service hours in September, the form should be turned in at the October meeting).
