Description of Awards
All Grades
Citizenship Award
- All teachers vote for 2 recipients per grade level. Selection is based on recommendation narrative.
8th Grade
President's Education Award (Gold/Silver)
- Recognizes academic excellence in the classroom (criteria from US Department of Education).
Gold Award
- Students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.5
- Students who have the required GPA are selected and then vetted by the teachers.
Silver Award
- Students demonstrate outstanding educational growth, improvement, and commitment to their learning. Criteria below.
- Teacher recommendations
- The following are examples of criteria for which the President’s Award for Educational Achievement may be presented:
- Shows tremendous growth but does not meet all criteria for the President’s Award for Educational Excellence.
- Demonstrate unusual commitment to learning in academics despite various obstacles.
- Maintain a school record that would have met the school’s selection criteria for the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, but illness, personal crisis, or special needs prevented the student from maintaining such high standards despite challenging work.
- Achieve high scores or show outstanding growth, improvement, commitment, or intellectual development in particular subjects, such as English, math, science, etc.
- Demonstrate achievements in the arts such as music or theater.
National Junior Honor Society
- Recognizes NJHS students who completed over 50 service hours for the year.
Dolby Award
- Recognizes one 8th grade Math/Science student for their efforts, interests, and determination in the Math/Science Specialty Program.
- Math and Science teachers may nominate for this award, which is then presented to all teachers for a vote. Selection is based on recommendation narrative.
Flanagan Award
- Recognizes one outstanding 8th grade student.
- Each subject area may nominate 2 outstanding students which are then presented to the teachers to vote. Selection is based on recommendation narrative.
Mullinax Award
- Recognizes one male and one female 8th grade student who have always exhibited outstanding sportsmanship, played at least two sports, and maintained a cumulative 3.0 average for all three years.
- Nominated and selected by the coaches.
8th Grade Department Awards
- Recognizes two outstanding 8th grade students per subject area.
- Departments: Civics, Math (prealgebra, algebra, geometry per teacher), Physical Education, World Language, Language Arts (Extended, regular per teacher), Creative Writing, Science (regular and math/science per teacher), Music, and Related Arts.
7th Grade
Buckner Award
- Recognizes one outstanding 7th grade student.
- Each subject area may nominate 2 outstanding students which are then presented to the teachers for a vote. Selection is based on recommendation narrative.
6th Grade
Cox Award
- Recognizes one outstanding 6th grade student.
- Each subject area may nominate 2 outstanding students which are then presented to the teachers for a vote. Selection is based on recommendation narrative.
Nominations for the Citizenship, Cox, Buckner, Flanagan, Dolby, and Department Awards require narratives describing why that student should be considered.
